I am trying to understand what's the problem with bdb because I see a lot of comments that one should use builds from bitcoincore.org

dviola: 5.3 produces files that can't be read by 4.8 sometimes, and 4.8 is what the stock builds all use

I was using builds from bitcoincore.org for a long time, started using distro builds just after I decided to try gentoo

because I didn't want the hassle to build it myself, and I can't trust myself with doing manual verification sometimes

the wallet.dat was created when I was using my own bitcoin builds, just moved it to bitcoin-qt from arch later on

I'm kind of worried about corner cases where it suddenly breaks and I lose everything... I will move the wallet.dat to my own build and resync

if it's a HD wallet, it should be hard to lose everything if you back it up
