i believe that long ago the GUI (may have been pre-Qt) worked like that, where the listed status of a transaction would be "sendijg" instead of "waiting for confirmation" until a transaction was echoed back to us

sipa: It would help detect tx relay issues like #28371, right? I was wondering if there's any open or closed PR. If there's nothing to read first I might just go try implement it.
